One of the most resourceful prevention tools available to parents is a free program offered by the U.S. Department of State: the&nbsp;<strong>Children\u2019s Passport Issuance Alert Program (CPIAP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a plain-English overview of what CPIAP does, who can use it, and how to enroll.<\/p>\n<h2>What is CPIAP?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>CPIAP is a free service that alerts a parent or legal guardian when someone applies for a U.S. passport for their child.<\/strong> The Department of State describes it as one of the most effective tools for helping prevent <strong>international parental child abduction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: if you\u2019re worried the other parent may try to obtain a passport for your child without your knowledge, CPIAP can help you get notified.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is eligible?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Department of State, <strong>only <\/strong><strong>children who are <\/strong><strong>U.S. citizens under <\/strong><strong>the <\/strong><strong>age <\/strong><strong>of <\/strong><strong>18<\/strong> can be enrolled.&nbsp; (Enrollment will automatically terminate when your child turns 18.)<\/p>\n<p>After enrollment, the Department of State will <strong>monitor passport applications for the child<\/strong><strong>\/children<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, please note that the program has its limits.&nbsp; The program offers an alert and monitoring program and is <em>not <\/em>a substitute for a custody Order.<\/p>\n<p>If you have concerns about a child being taken out of the country without your consent,&nbsp;it is critical to speak with a family law attorney about your options.&nbsp; We offer <strong>free consultations<\/strong> to help you protect what matters most.<\/p>\n<p><em>This post is for general informational purposes and is not legal advice.
